The term cameo is borrowed directly from the Italian Cameo which has the same origin as the word camaïeu (a gradient of colors of the same tone). The first ones date back to Greece and Ancient Rome. They displayed images of gods and goddesses, heroes, leaders, religious figures or significant events.
it is cut from a hard stone such as agate, carnelian, chalcedony or sardonyx. The latter offer the different layers of colors allowing the contrasts necessary for the representation in relief.
Nevertheless, other materials can be used such as shells, corals or the lava of Vesuvius. The shade of the cameo varies according to the material used to make it.
