The Story: Pearls have been cherished for over 6,000 years, appearing in ancient civilizations from Mesopotamia to China. Formed inside shells in reaction to the infiltration of a foreign body, natural pearls are extremely rare: a single quality pearl can take thousands of oysters and years to develop. In mythology, they often symbolize purity, wisdom, and wealth, revered as gifts from the sea and moon. One of the most famous pearls in history, La Peregrina, was discovered in the Gulf of Panama in the sixteenth century. Weighing 55 carats, it was gifted to Spanish royalty, illustrating the precious status of pearls through the centuries. Birthstones for the month of June, they symbolize purity, wisdom, and enduring love and are associated with 30 years of marriage.
