Onyx

Onyx is a subvariety of the chalcedony family that itself belongs to the quartz family. It is acclaimed by jewelers for its hardness and the easiness with which it can be carved, especially for the making of intaglios.
Onyx is usually translucent or opaque black, sometimes with white stripes that distinguish themselves from the white circles or eye-shaped waves characteristic of agates.
