Rubies belong to the family of the corundum, meaning they are actually red sapphires. They take their name from the Latin “ruber” meaning “red”. Like emeralds, natural rubies always have inclusions, which guarantees their authenticity.
Because of its flamboyant color, ruby is often associated with passion around the world. In India, legend has it that its color comes from an internal fire that cannot be extinguished. In many Asian cultures, ruby evokes protection and was worn by warriors and rulers for this purpose. Among Christians, it represents the blood of Christ and adorned the rings of cardinals.
Birthstone of July, ruby is also a stone associated with passionate love and celebrates the 35th anniversary of a wedding.
