Belonging to the beryl family, like emeralds, morganite was first identified in Madagascar in 1910 as “pink beryl”.
Soon after, the famous American gemologist George F. Kunz renamed it in honor of John Pierpont (JP) Morgan, an American banker and passionate collector of precious stones.
Since its discovery, morganite has been prized by collectors of precious stones because of its rarity.
