This unique piece had a previous life in France.
The story: In nineteenth-century French culture, the crescent moon symbolized femininity, change, and celestial mystery, in keeping with the romantic fascination with nature and the cosmos. Associated with the goddess Artemis, he represented purity, independence, and the sacred feminine and contrasted with Appollon, Artemis’ brother and God of the Sun. These symbolisms of the crescent moon made it a particularly prized motif in jewelry, especially for tie pins, brooches and pendants. Frequently fashioned in gold and adorned with pearls or diamonds, these pieces of jewelry reflected both a taste for celestial themes and a belief in the moon as a good luck charm and symbol of protection.
