The story: Onyx, whose name comes from the Greek onyx meaning “nail” or “claw” in reference to the light and translucent shades of certain varieties of the stone, has been appreciated in jewelry since ancient times. The Greeks and Romans used it in particular to make cameos, intaglios and seals, playing on the different layers of the stone. A traditional symbol of protection, strength and self-control, it experienced a real golden age in the nineteenth century, then during the Art Deco period, where its deep black contrasts with the brilliance of gold, pearls and diamonds. A variety of chalcedony with graphic and timeless beauty, onyx remains an emblematic stone of jewelry today.
