The Story: Diamonds help us define the era of antique jewelry, as their cut has evolved over time. From handcrafted rose-cut diamonds from the sixteenth century to the old-cut diamonds from the nineteenth century to the modern 57-faceted brilliant-cut diamond, laser-cut for optimal light reflection, the diamond can betray the age of the jewels. That said, this ring from the 40s features two diamond cuts, revealing that its central diamond was later replaced, which often happens with jewelry that has had several lives. As for the name of the ring style, the Garter ring was a very popular style of engagement ring in the 1920s. It takes its name from the accessory of the same name worn by the bride on her wedding day. It is a ribbon that is placed above the knee in order to hold the socks in place.
