The story: Emerald, the stone of the natives of May, takes its name from the ancient Greek “smaragdos” meaning “green stone”. Emerald is a variety of beryl, its color ranging from soft green to deep green due to traces of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Revered since ancient times, the emerald symbolizes fertility, rebirth and eternal love. The Egyptians of Cleopatra’s time considered it a sacred stone: the queen herself possessed mines of it and had her jewels and talismans set with it. In ancient Rome, emerald was thought to soothe the mind and enhance vision, hence its use by scholars and scribes. Rich in mystery and prestige, the emerald remains today a symbol of renewal, inner harmony and eternal beauty.
