The story: The Phaistos Disc is an enigmatic archaeological artifact discovered in 1908 in the Minoan palace of Phaistos on the island of Crete. Dated to about 1700 B.C., this fired clay disc measures about 15 cm in diameter and bears, on both sides, a spiral of stamped symbols — 241 in total, divided into 45 distinct signs. These symbols were printed using stamps, making them one of the earliest known examples of letterpress printing. To date, neither the language nor the meaning of the text has been deciphered, which feeds into many hypotheses, ranging from a religious text to an ancient game. Its uniqueness and mystery make it one of the most fascinating objects in archaeology.
