The story: Vermeil is an alloy made of silver coated with gold by an electroplating treatment. The silver used must be at least 800 thousandths and the gold layer at least 18 carats and 5 microns thick. Most of the large objects of goldsmith’s work that seem to be of gold are in fact of gilt; this is the case for many Crown Jewels of England or the Grand Cross plaque of the Legion of Honour. Being composed of two hypoallergenic metals, gold and silver, vermeil does not cause allergy. In addition, it offers exceptional strength thanks to the bonding between the two metals by molecular adhesion.
