The story: The Japanese torii is a traditional gate often found at the entrance to Shinto shrines. Symbolizing the passage from the secular to the sacred world, the torii is usually composed of two vertical pillars supporting two horizontal bars in the center of which is a third vertical bar. It can be made of wood, stone, or metal and varies in size and style. The vermilion red torii is particularly famous and is believed to ward off malevolent spirits. Present in emblematic places such as the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine in Kyoto, the torii remains a powerful symbol of Japanese spirituality and culture.
