Material of organic origin, coral is appreciated for its shades of colors ranging from light “angelskin skin” peach to the brightest red.
Coral has been used in jewelry since ancient times in the making of pearl necklaces or protective amulets. Both mystical and magical, corals went from decorating the helmets and swords of the Celts, to being used as miniature talisman by the Chinese. Symbol of fertility in Europe, coral was considered by the Amerindians as a sacred stone capable of protecting against the evil eye.
According to Greek mythology, coral would be none other than algae petrified by the gaze of the Gorgon Medusa, defeated by Perseus.
