The story: Existing since about 3500 BC, the emerald mines of Egypt were discovered during the 19th century by the French explorer Frédéric Cailliaud. These emerald mines were soon named “Cleopatra’s Mines” because the last pharaoh of Egypt was a great lover of the green gem. With Caesar’s help in 47 BC, she had seized all the mines in the country. Over time, these mines were depleted and replaced by those of Colombia, whose gem beauty made it the world’s leading exporter.
