The story: Hoop earrings have a strong identity connotation because they were the only piece of jewelry that slaves were allowed to wear in the West Indies, hence their name in French: “Creoles”. They have since been reclaimed by black women, notably songstresses of the 70’s such as Gloria Gaynor.
