The story: If blue sapphire is the best known of this family of corundums, it actually exists in a wide variety of colors. Available from yellow to purple through red, sapphire also exists in a “white” version which is more accurately colorless. White sapphire is quite rare since it is a corundum devoid of any impurities. It has long been used to replace diamond before the appearance of synthetic diamonds.
