The Story: Coins have been made into jewelry since ancient times, from Antique Rome to Medieval England. During the Renaissance, it was a trend for the wealthy to imprint their portrait on coins that were then set on pendants or rings. After World War I and WWII, they were sometimes given as wedding bands. It is said that these rings were often made by the military in the trenches or on Navy ships, by hitting the coin with a large silver spoon repeatedly for hours on end.
