The story: The Marquise ring takes its name from the Marquise de Pompadour, whose smile inspired Louis XIV to shape this ring that he had made in her honor. Quickly, the marquise ring became popular at court and became a ring of choice for engagements. Its style evolves from the oblong shape seen here to a shape closer to the cluster ring style, such as the engagement ring offered by Prince Charles to Lady Diana, a famous marquise ring.
